The Howgill Fells are rounded grass-covered hills referred to as 'Sleeping Elephants' by the renowned walker and writer Alfred Wainwright. The Howgills offer the visitor a little piece of wilderness, grazed by sheep and semi-feral ponies. They are separated from the Lake District to the west by the River Lune and from the Yorkshire Dales in the east by the Dent fault and are characterised by a general lack of walls and fences.
Sedbergh is nestled at the southern foot of the Howgill Fells. It is home to Sedbergh School, one of the UK’s premier boarding schools with a high reputation for producing top-flight sports stars but it’s also England’s Book Town. You will find knowledgeable traders selling a whole range of books from first editions to modern classics.
The main street has a good greengrocers who also sell deli goods including a great range of cheeses, fruit juices, cakes and other epicurean delicacies.
